What's the Difference Between a Pergola and a Gazebo?
The main difference between a pergola and a gazebo is the roof. A traditional gazebo usually features a solid roof, providing shade and shelter from the rain, making it ideal for outdoor dining, entertaining or simply relaxing in the garden. A pergola, on the other hand, typically has an open framework of beams or slats, creating partial shade and a more open feel. Modern aluminium pergolas can also feature adjustable roofs, offering greater flexibility and protection from the elements. Explore our timber and aluminium ranges below to discover which style best suits your garden.

Sizes & Measurements
Timber gazebo and pergola dimensions are measured from outer post to outer post, excluding roof overhangs. Consider the complete footprint, particularly near fences, boundaries or existing landscaping.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a pergola and a gazebo?
In the WGB timber range, the Churchill pergola has an open roof framework, while the Wellington and Nelson gazebos have covered roofs. Other systems, including the Morvelle louvred pergola, have adjustable roof arrangements.
Can a timber gazebo be made to a different size?
The Wellington, Nelson and Churchill range includes bespoke size and height options. Discuss your available space and intended use with the team so we can confirm what is suitable.
Do pergola measurements include the roof overhang?
Not always. The WGB timber gazebo and pergola brochure measures from outer post to outer post, excluding the overhang. Confirm the complete external dimensions before preparing the site.
Will an open pergola keep out the rain?
An open timber pergola is not a weatherproof shelter. If rain cover is important, compare a roofed gazebo, canopy, veranda or an appropriate roofed pergola system.
Do you offer aluminium pergolas?
Yes. WGB offers Morvelle aluminium outdoor living structures, including a bioclimatic pergola with a motorised adjustable louvred roof. The chosen size, configuration and additional features are confirmed in the quotation.
Are glass screens, blinds and heaters included with a Morvelle pergola?
They are system-specific options unless expressly included in your quotation. Morvelle brochures show sliding or fixed glazing, zip blinds and other accessories, while Select also lists compatible heaters and weather sensors. Ask us to separate the base structure from the extras you want.
Do I need planning permission for a pergola or gazebo?
The answer depends on the structure, height, position, property and intended use. An attached canopy or veranda may also raise different considerations from a freestanding garden structure. Check the requirements for the actual proposal with the relevant planning authority before committing.
